Spring – Summer 2017

Catwalk Hat Trends.

Quite a few hat trends that were up and coming during the winter have shown up again this spring.  The difference this season is that they have been up-styled, we are seeing a lot of embellishment particularly to berets and baseball caps.  Look out for large brim straw hats for your summer protection as well as the catwalk favourite the visor, which was shown in all shapes and sizes.

Womens colour trends for Spring/summer 2017

Cowboy hats. Decorated and embellished, coloured or plain white – seen best at Anna Sui and Sonia Rykiel.

Berets.  An on-going, hot trend for the coming summertime. Classic French berets throughout the spring develops into highly decorative and bejewelled and oversized, floral or guerrilla glam – best seen at Desigual, Undercover.

Veils. On everything – pillar boxes, headbands and fascinators.  You get the feeling of full-on Gothic, and film noir – best seen at Dries Van Noten, Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Costello.

Military/uniform. – WW11 sailor hats, officer peaked caps, exaggerated military marching band hats all best seen at Yohji Yamamoto, Vivetta, Moncler Gamme.  Seen both for men and women – especially the Sailor cap for men.

Visors. Are making a serious comeback amongst the fashion crowd and they are getting a high profile whether they are utilitarian, floral or getting the cheeky summer vacation treatment or blended into the wearers hair – best seen at Daks, Max Mara, Nicholas K. Seen both for men and women.

Straw hats. Gold is prominent as well as darker colours – black and navy. Very wide and oversized brims – sometimes with fabric crowns are strong as well as big frayed straw summer hats.  Classic Panamas and straw bowlers and farmer hats – best seen at Agnes B, Armani, Blumarine and Christian Siriano, Jacquemus, Tome, and Liselore Frowijn.

Fisherman Hats & Bucket Hats. Are glammed up this season and sometimes re-invented in both fabric and leather. Pastels and embellished fabrications best seen at Aalto, Etro, Paul & Joe. Seen both for men and women.

Head Scarves and wraps. Keffiyeh-style scarves at Daks, 50’s and 20’s at Armani Gucci extravagant wraps.

You will see that a lot of hat trends for Men run alongside the strongest Women’s trends this Spring/Summer. The other trends that stand out include the following styles.

Mens colour trends for Spring/summer 2017.

The Newsboy. Much like white sneakers and scruffy beards, the newsboy cap has become a must. On the runways, the hat has been taken to new oversized 70’s proportions.

Skullcap. Too short to be a beanie and too cool to care is the skullcap. The shrunken hat has come in many fabrics over the years, but the style having a resurgence outside the men’s shows is a tightly woven knit.

Military beret. This is not Picasso’s beret. The new stiff beret is drawn from military styles with ribbon bands and more structured crowns. It’s become something of a runway mainstay that has yet to take off on the streets.

Summer Beanie. A beanie is nothing too new, but wearing one on hot summer days is surely unexpected. Several men’s street stylers have brought their knit hat game to the June shows, tucking the hat behind the ears for a more summery feel.

Fedoras. Take a Fedora, cross it with a straw sun hat, and you have the woven park ranger toppers from Etro. With a shorter brim than expected, the style is more wearable but still requires a certain level of sartorial commitment.

Fitted baseball cap. Sports fans will be well acquainted with the fitted hat, which has transitioned from a stadium to a style essential.
